Lavender Brown was a relatively minor character in the Harry Potter movies, and was played by several actresses throughout the film series. Two of the actresses who played the role, Kathleen Cauley and Jennifer Smith are black, but when the part grew bigger in The Half-Blood Prince, it went to a white actress, Jessie Cave.
Though no official explanation for the decision was given, fans speculate that Lavender was first considered a background character, and the filmmakers didn’t know that the role would later become bigger when they assigned Lavender’s character to the background actresses.
