She is one of the biggest stars in the world, with an Academy Award under her belt and a top spot on the highest paid actresses in Hollywood, but Jennifer Lawrence was a relatively anonymous actress when she was cast as Mystique in X-Men: First Class. When the news of her casting as the blue-skinned shapeshifting mutant broke, Lawrence was a promising actress facing some big shoes to fill, those of Rebecca Romijn.
The model and actress originated the role of Mystique and played the character in the first three X-Men movies, but when the franchise changed timelines and started telling the group’s origin stories, casting changes had to be made. Lawrence was cast as young Mystique, alongside several other actors playing younger versions of previously seen X-Men characters. In interviews she gave while promoting the film, Lawrence said that she learned a lot from her predecessor, while Romijn herself said she “could not think of a cooler girl to share that role with”.
