Irish star Richard Harris was the first actor to play the role of Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter’s teacher at Hogwarts. He played the role on both Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and was expected to continue throughout the film series. Harris had health issues, and was hesitant about taking the role.
It was his granddaughter, who was 11 at the time, who talked him into it. Unfortunately, Harris passed away before he was able to complete the series, and the role had to be recast. Michael Gambon was brought in to play Dumbledore, bringing his own talents and wits to the part, and played him in the remaining Harry Potter films.
