In Batman Begins, it was Katie Holmes who played Batman’s flame, Rachel Dawes. But a part in the 2008 film Mad Money seemed like a more appropriate choice for the actress at the time, and she decided not to reprise her role in the next Batman movie. Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal was called to fill Holmes’ shoes in The Dark Knight, which went on to become the highest grossing film of the trilogy.
Holmes later told in interviews that she doesn’t regret her decision to drop the role, and described working with the film’s director, Christopher Nolan, as a great experience. Neither of them took part in the third instalment of the series, The Dark Knight Rises, as the character of Rachel Dawes wasn’t featured in it.
