While this recasting isn’t apparent to everyone, hardcore fans of The Matrix may already know this. That’s because the character of Zee was recast just a few months before the movie was released, due to a horrific tragedy.
Originally, singer Aaliyah was all set to play Zee, and she had almost completely finished filming before her tragic passing. While footage and photos still exist of her in this role today, producers eventually decided to recast Nona Gaye as Zee for the final cut.
