John LaMarr, portrayed by J. Lee, starts off in the beginning of the series as the Orville’s navigator, where he becomes instant best buds with Malloy. However, once Grayson find out that he is actually quite intellectually gifted and has been hiding his talent in order to fit in with his peers, she encourages him to fulfill his true potential.
As a result, LaMarr ends up getting promoted from lieutenant to lieutenant commander, replacing the outgoing Commander Newton as the spacecraft’s newest chief engineer.
