David Spade was already well-known when he joined 8 Simple Rules, which is perhaps why he was cast following Ritter’s passing. The actor had been a cast member on Saturday Night Live, as well as appearing in movies like the road comedy Tommy Boy.
Spade’s role in 8 Simple Rules was just one of several times that he found success in a sitcom. He played a lead character in the shows Just Shoot Me! And Rules of Engagement, the latter of which ended in 2013 after seven successful seasons.
