Bernadette is actually Penny’s nerdy friend who works as a microbiologist. She makes her first appearance in the show’s third season when Penny introduces her to Howard. At first, things go slowly because they can’t seem to find much of anything in common. But this rough start turns to smooth sailings when they find out that they both have overbearing mothers. They get married in the fifth season and they have a daughter together named Hailie and seemingly live happily ever after.
