The man in the tux is one of the most recognizable characters in movie history. Who doesn’t love to strap in and enjoy the ride whenever 007 hits theaters on his latest adventures. Britain’s coolest and suavest secret agent might be a fictional character, but he’s a huge part of British culture as well. With his fast cars, cool gadgets, and delicious vodka-martinis, James Bond is a total dude.
Since Daniel Craig hung up his gun, the identity of the next actor to step into those stylish shoes has remained something of a mystery. In fact, it’s one of the most hotly debated topics in cinema, and we are still no closer to finding out the answer. With rumors that Craig might possibly be persuaded to don that tux for a fifth and final time, we look at some of the other potentials who could be the next James Bond.
We love Idris – an actor with such wonderful screen presence and physicality. The London-born star has already had experience with crime fighting in hit cop show Luther, and is making a name for himself in Hollywood as well. Transitioning from character actor to leading man has been relatively easy for Drissa, and he certainly has the perfect physique for the more physical Bond popularized by Craig. The only drawback is that, at 45, he might consider himself too old for the role.
Verdict: Unlikely (but we can hope!)
Tom first rose to prominence when he took the role of Loki, first in Thor, and, more successfully, in The Avengers. He has followed this up with some top roles in Hollywood, but it’s his TV work that has the most Bond-like connections. Winning the lead role in The Night Manager, for which he won a Golden Globe, showed that he can pull off the commanding, cold-blooded, and intimidating. It got us very excited about whispers of a Bond role, and this could very well happen!
Another cut from a similar cloth to Hiddleston, Fassbender is one of the most captivating and intriguing actors Britain and Ireland have produced in some time. Varied roles in movies like 300, Inglourious Basterds, and Shame showed the great range he possesses as an actor. We already had an Irish Bond with Pierce Brosnan, and maybe, just maybe, we’re ready for a second one. Fassbender could definitely play the darker and more unpleasant side of Bond’s character, and still be incredibly watchable.
Verdict: Fairly likely.
Is there a finer actor around currently than Tom Hardy? The guy can literally play anything and is capable of performing all manner of roles. Recently starring alongside Leo in The Revenant, Hardy hit another home run and has long been touted as the obvious successor for the role of Bond. He’s very British, can perfectly play the white collar thug, and he’s just so pretty as well! The only trouble is, he might be too famous for the role to work effectively!
Verdict: Very possible (crossing fingers and arms!)
There are so many potentials who could play the role of James Bond next, and it’s crucial the producers make the right decision. We know the actor will need to be British or Irish, and he will certainly have to be age-appropriate. The guys on this list are the ones who have been talked about the most, and one of whom we secretly hope will nab the role.
