What the biggest musical acts of the ’90s are doing now

As much as we might not like to admit it, the 90s are two full decades away now – and in the world of show business, that’s an eternity. We might look back fondly on our favorite acts from the 90s as if we were dancing to their hits only yesterday, but that just isn’t the case. 20 years is a very long time for change to happen in, and for these acts, change is exactly what they got.

The Backstreet Boys

The Backstreet Boys burst onto our airwaves back in 1996, and despite their constant declarations that they’re back, you might be surprised to learn that they never really left. In 2006 Kevin Richardson left the band, which certainly damaged their relevance, and the degree to which they were consistently in the public eye. However, the Backstreet Boys never really stopped releasing music, putting out the albums ‘Unbreakable’ in 2007, ‘This is Us’ in 2009, and ‘In a World Like This’ in 2013. Although the album sales weren’t at the dizzying heights that they were in the late 90s and early 2000s, the band seemed content to keep making music with one another. To this day, the Backstreet Boys are still releasing music, with their album ‘DNA’ dropping on January 23, 2019.

The Spice Girls

Over the 6 years that they were a unit, the Spice Girls became the biggest names in music, becoming the biggest-selling female band in history over their time together, and changing the face of pop-culture forever. In 2000 the band split, and the Spice Girls have each pursued pretty varied paths since then. Each of the band’s members tried their hand at solo music, with varying success, before moving into different fields. Mel C continues to release albums, and has also had a successful stage career. Mel B and Emma Bunton have had successful presenting careers, with Mel B appearing as a judge on ‘America’s Got Talent’ and Bunton hosting a show on British radio station Heart. Geri Halliwell made a foray into children’s books and is a goodwill ambassador for the UN, while Victoria Beckham runs the extremely successful ‘Victoria Beckham’ fashion label.

Vanilla Ice

If you say the name ‘Vanilla Ice’, you are liable to draw either weary disdain from fans of rap, or amused recognition from people who immediately ask ‘I wonder what he’s doing now?’ This is a very fair question, as Vanilla Ice is one of music’s more memorable blips. Releasing the song ‘Ice Ice Baby’ in 1990, Vanilla Ice was catapulted into immediate stardom, with the song becoming a monster hit. However, his success was something of a double-edged sword, causing Ice to be dismissed as a novelty, and hampering his chances of continued success a great deal. Ice has released several albums since ‘Ice Ice Baby’ was released, but almost all of them have been commercial and critical failures. However, he has managed to find some considerable success on TV. Since 2009, Ice has appeared in ‘The Vanilla Ice Project’, a reality TV show focused on his work renovating different homes. Each season follows a different house, and it continues to run today, reaching its 9th season in 2009.
