If you’re a 90s baby, congratulations – you were officially born in the best decade ever known to man. The Spice Girls gave us all girl power, our favorite sixsome showed us what it truly means to be a great friend, and most importantly, the delights from Nickelodeon burst onto our TV screens. As a result, we sometimes wish that our children could experience what we had – unadulterated joy, great hope, and pure prosperity.
If you plan to show your kids what life was really like in the good-old-days (depressingly just 20 years ago), stick on some of these 90s movies. From big blockbuster family favorites to the understated classic heart-warmers…
Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
A cross-dressing classic comedy.
A broken-hearted single father Daniel (Robin William), is forced to leave the family home and adapt to life without living with his kids. Finding it hard to see his ex-wife (Sally Field) build a new family life with their hunky stepfather (Pierce Brosnan), Daniel decides to apply for the position of their new nanny dressed up as the sweet-hearted old lady called Mrs. Doubtfire.
Forrest Gump (1994)
An Academy-Award-winning heart-warming drama.
The story follows Forrest Gump through several decades of his life. Forrest is a slow-learning but kind-hearted young man who somehow gets caught up in a string of politically and culturally influential events throughout the 20th century. It’s based on an original novel, but the film differs slightly. We recommend both.
Space Jam (1996)
A cheesy and fun basketball comedy.
‘Space Jam’ was one of the first films to combine animation and live-action. It stars basketball legend Michael Jordan who needs the assistance of the Looney Tunes in order to defeat a bunch of evil aliens wanting to kidnap and exhibit them in an amusement park back home on their own planet – just a typical day at the office!
Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco (1996)
An animal-odyssey family drama.
After fleeing a plane thinking they were being sent away to the pound, two pet dogs and a pet cat embark on a rollercoaster adventure across San Francisco in seek of their owners. If you love animals, you’ll love this. It’s just as charming, if not more charming than the original released three years earlier in 1993. Watch both!
The Parent Trap (1998)
A wonderful cult-classic, far better than the original.
As a remake of the 1961 original, this family rom-com follows identical twins separated at birth as they finally reunite at a summer camp when they’re 12 years old. It stars a fresh-faced Lindsay Lohan in her breakout role, and also Hollywood favorites Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson as the twins’ divorced parents.
The Witches (1990)
A spooky adaptation of Roal Dahl’s classic children’s novel.
With a remake due to be released in the next few years, we suggest revisiting this 1990 British version first. Eight-year-old Luke must work with his grandmother to defeat the Grand High Witch (Angelica Houston), who plans to eradicate all children from the world with a secret formula potion. Houston’s performance is genuinely terrifying – even for us adults!
