Most overrated horror movies of all time

Any title with the word ‘overrated’ in it is likely to be incendiary, especially if it is about horror movies, and we know that. Look, we aren’t looking to troll horror fans here, but let’s be honest, there are some horror flicks out there that are just straight up not that good – yet inexplicably lauded! In fact, there are movies like this is every genre, but it’s certainly something that’s more noticeable among horror flicks.

Now, there are as many underrated horror movies as there are overrated ones – Netflix original Hush is a good example. But, it tends to irk us a little more when it comes to horror flicks that are overrated, as we often feel they’ve no need to be. So, let’s draw the curtain, dim the lights, take the phone off the hook, and check out some of the most overrated horror flicks of all time.

The Omen (1976)

Now, don’t get us wrong, The Omen is not bad. In fact, it’s a pretty good movie all round. But it’s not one of the greatest horror flicks of all time, as some have decreed. It’s very dated and campy, and this plays to its advantage – but the movie never fully embraces that, and seems to take itself too seriously. It’s also too slow at points – there’s slow burner, and then there’s just plain boring. The Omen is one of those movies we want to like more, but there’s too much wrong with it, and the over hype knocks it down a few pegs as well.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

Okay, let’s get real here – this movie is pants. Sure, it seems like a cool film; the concept is good, and the lead actors are all beautiful future stars. It’s also written by Kevin Williamson who penned Scream. Unfortunately, the factors are not enough to save it – the film is simply a mess. The pacing is all over the place, the plot makes no sense, and some of the dialogue is cringeworthy. How they managed to get an actress of Anne Heche’s abilities in this is a total mystery. The movie may not be revered, but it’s certainly remembered fondly, and that makes it overrated.

Haute Tension (2003)

This movie is also well-known by another name, Switchblade Romance, and was a very highly rated French horror movie in the early-‘00s… but we’re still trying to figure out why. The major problem with this movie is that it thinks it is much cleverer than it is. And, among all its pontificating, it actually forgets to make any sense. This one is so overrated it will infuriate you if you actually get round to seeing it.

Drag Me To H*** (2009)

The reason this movie is so overrated is largely because it has horror heavyweight Sam Raimi’s name attached to it. But, that’s not enough for us, unfortunately, and it doesn’t change the fact that this is not a good movie. It possesses none of the charms and scares of previous Raimi efforts like Evil Dead, and the film has a lot of problems. It’s not scary, the heroine is not engaging, and many aspects of the script are unbelievable – even for a horror flick.

These are movies that have been lauded and revered by audiences and critics, but actually really aren’t all that good. We can’t understand why these flicks get the praise they do. Some of them are bad, while others are simply decent, but considered to be among the greatest movies ever. We think they are simply overrated, and we’re sure you’ll agree!
