The best female role models on TV

Although it’s safe to say that Hollywood reigns supreme, there’s no doubt about the fact that those who make their way onto the small screen have a huge impact on our lives. After all, we can sometimes binge-watch a whole box set in one weekend, and we come to know and love these characters like our own friends. This is especially true when it comes to the women of television, as these leading ladies have proved to be incredible role models over the years.

Annalise Keating, ‘How to Get Away With…’

Although Annalise Keating is a hugely influential character, we can’t talk about this woman without talking about Viola Davis herself. Both this actress and her character are a credit to womankind if you forget about the fact that she tries to cover up numerous illegal activities. As a strong and successful lawyer, Annalise is the best in the business. She puts on a tough exterior to beat her competition, but she’s also not afraid to show the world that she’s vulnerable every so often. It’s this balance that all women need to appreciate.

Daenerys Targaryen, Game of Thrones

Ah, the Mother of Dragons herself. If you’ve ever seen Game of Thrones, you’ll know that it’s full of strong men who try to stake their place in power. However, thrust in the center of this power play is a strong woman who many take for granted. She soon proves to those who doubted her that she has what it takes to not only overpower these men but also rule the Seven Kingdoms. As if that wasn’t cool enough, she’s also the only character to have dragons. You can’t beat that.

Dr. Mindy Lahiri, The Mindy Project

As Mindy Lahiri says herself, “It is so weird being my own role model.” Yes, while Mindy may not be that lucky in love, it’s safe to say that she has been the independent woman we all need in our lives. This intelligent, smart and funny OB/GYN has taught us that you can be quirky and cute while also being the boss of your existence. As if that wasn’t enough, she is a strong advocate for women in terms of their health and careers, and plainly shows what life can be like as a single mom.

Buffy Summers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Okay, so she may technically be a slayer, but she saves the world at the same time. In that sense, Buffy is one of the greatest women to ever (fictionally) live. Every day, this teenager would battle between her two lives. As a mortal, she would have to go through the stresses and struggles of school, and then as a vampire slayer she would fight off demons and slay vampires who aimed to hurt the world and those who lived in it. Could she get any cooler?

Yes, the small screen is full of impressive and inspiring women who are a credit to womankind. Could we get better role models? We think not.
