Actors who took things too far on set

Acting is a craft, and there are many different approaches one can take to a role. The fascinating thing about many actors is how different and fresh their approaches are. We know that a lot of movie stars need to feel as though they are completely inhabiting a role, and this can often lead to extreme behavior both on and off the set.

Some actors and actresses are renowned for either going to extremes on set or for just being plain difficult to work with. Nobody likes a diva, but when you have a multimillion dollar motion picture resting on the shoulders of a particular diva, it can be a nightmare scenario. Here is a list of some of the Hollywood stars who wound up taking things too far with their on-set behavior.

Christian Bale

Bale is considered to be a very respected and accomplished actor. The sort of meltdowns like the one he had on the set of Terminator: Salvation are unexpected and unprecedented. The infamous rant, which was recorded, and sees Bale hurling expletives at cinematographer Shane Hurlbut, has gone down in movie history. To be fair to Bale, Hurlbut was a distraction during scenes. Still, there’s no denying he overreacted, which is likely why he was so quick to apologize.

Katherine Heigl

Katherine Heigl’s infamous diva qualities have been well documented, and she is considered one of the most difficult actresses in Hollywood to work with. Tales of her allegedly bad behavior have spread all over Tinseltown, and none more so than on the set of Life As We Know It. The former Roswell star apparently made the filming of the 2010 movie an absolute nightmare. She reportedly insisted on script changes, caused delays in filming, and there were countless wardrobe issues. This is one of many examples of the actress proving difficult to work with.

Shia LaBeouf

Shia LaBeouf has endured several meltdowns over the past few years, and now has a reputation for being something of a Hollywood bad boy. The young actor’s talent seems matched only by his capacity for self-sabotage, and one example of this was on the set of the movie Lawless. LaBeouf allegedly had an altercation with co-star Tom Hardy – which is either very brave or very stupid, considering Tom is twice his size! It’s been played down since, and it seems as though the two have become friends. Still, Shia seems like a ticking time bomb waiting to go off at any moment.

Lindsay Lohan

The poster child for the difficult Hollywood star, at one time LiLo was on the road to greatness. Her misdemeanors and troubles on-set are so well-documented it would be difficult to name just one. But, perhaps her behavior on the set of Georgia Rules is the best example to use. The actress was apparently insufferable and was said to be acting like a spoilt child. She would sometimes show up late, often missing days of filming altogether. This reportedly led to an altercation with legend Jane Fonda on set!

So, these are just a few of the big-name stars who have been documented as taking things too far on set. There are other big names we could have chosen, Marlon Brando, and Gene Hackman are good examples. But, it’s important to keep in mind that not all actors are like this, and for some, these were one offs as well.
