Check out these comic books with a female hero

Let’s be honest, female superheroes, or heroes in general, have been severely underrepresented and underrated. However, after the release of films such as Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel, people have been delving deeper into the comic universe to get their female hero fix. Of course, they don’t always have to be ‘super’ to be a hero.

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’

Probably not what you were expecting to be first on the list, but after the series ended on their seventh season, Joss Whedon and crew decided to continue the story via comic book. Of course, you may want to watch the series first, but the comics have always been brilliant at representing strong female characters alike. Even previous co-star, Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, helped to write portions of the story, giving a unique insight.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

‘Storm’

Storm was one of the best, and most radical, superheroes of her time. The history of her creation was centered around diversification amidst a time of marginalization. The character was originally a male named Typhoon, which just wouldn’t have had the same ring to it. It wasn’t just making her a woman that diversified the all-male X-Men group at the time; it was also because she was African-American, with royal Kenyan roots. Aside from that, she’s one of the strongest and coolest female characters out there.

‘Radioactive Spider-Gwen’

You’ve probably heard of the amazing Spider-Man, practically everyone has, but have you heard of Spider-Woman? Well, while they’re two separate things, Spider-Gwen has her own comics, and even universe, where she is the prevalent character. This could be fun for most fans looking for a female protagonist within an already well-loved and well-established concept.

‘Captain Marvel’

Especially with the new movie release, the story of Captain Marvel has become a popular one, with people scrambling for her comic book to read her true origins story. Captain Marvel is a fantastic frontier for female superheroes and has been known to be friends with a few too. By reading through Captain Marvel’s story, you will not only come to know the beloved character as the artists intended, but you will also find yourself crossing over with the likes of Jessica Jones and Spider-Woman.

‘Wonder Woman’

You absolutely can’t forget about Wonder Woman. Of course, as any long-standing character would have, she has undergone a lot of character changes, with her story progressing her as a hero. The fundamentals remain the same, with Diana being everything everyone wants to be, she’s basically immortal, the daughter of a God, grew up around and as an Amazonian woman, she has incredible super abilities, and she loves animals – what’s not to like?

Wonder Woman

‘Jean Grey, AKA The Phoenix or Dark Phoenix’

Jean Grey has blown away people within comic books and on the big screen, with a new movie about to be released called ‘Dark Phoenix.’ She is one of the earliest incarnations of a strong female character and continues to hold her post today. She has some fantastic and compelling storylines which are too good to miss.

There are plenty of female comic book characters out there, you just need to know where to look, and occasionally try and overlook the skimpy outfits they seem to be in. Either way, these should provide you with enough of a female-hero kick until then.
